Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Damper Repair: The West Palm Beach Owner’s Guide

We repair and replace DuraFlex dampers throughout West Palm Beach, and a typical installed replacement runs $285 – $520 depending on the damper size and whether the frame needs re-seating. We stock the common DuraFlex sizes on the truck, so most jobs are done in a single visit. What usually brings a homeowner to this page is the same story: the damper cable snapped, or the plate won’t seat flat anymore, or a draft you can feel standing six feet from the fireplace started showing up somewhere it never did before.

DuraFlex makes a solid damper, but South Florida humidity and salt air work on the steel frame and cable hardware year-round. The part doesn’t usually fail from use. It fails from corrosion settling into the hinge points while the fireplace sits idle for eight months at a stretch. We see this pattern all over West Palm Beach, from the older bungalows in Grandview Heights to the mid-century homes off Southern Boulevard.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

The DuraFlex damper line covers three series we work with regularly: the standard round-top units found in most prefab fireboxes, the low-profile rectangular series used in shallower masonry fireplaces, and the top-mount dampers that replaced older throat dampers on many West Palm Beach chimneys built before 1990. Each series uses a different frame footprint and cable routing, so the part number matters more than the brand name stamped on it.

The fastest way to identify yours is the label riveted to the damper frame, usually on the left inside edge. It will show a series code and a diameter or width measurement. If the label is gone, we measure the flue opening and match the frame from there. One gotcha specific to DuraFlex: the round-top dampers changed cable attachment hardware around 2014, and a pre-2014 cable assembly will not seat on the newer damper plate. We carry both versions so a mismatched cabling job doesn’t turn into a two-visit repair. Aftermarket replacements exist, but we generally install OEM DuraFlex parts because the frame tolerances and cable lengths match exactly, which matters when the damper has to seal tight against downdraft pressure in a coastal wind zone.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing

  • The cable pulls but the plate doesn’t move. This is almost always the cable ferrule pulling loose from the plate bracket. The cable itself is intact; the connection point failed. We fix this quickly, but it doesn’t heal on its own.
  • You feel a draft when the damper is closed. The plate has warped slightly, or the frame seal has hardened and isn’t seating. Either way, outside air is entering the flue and pushing into your living space, which in a West Palm Beach summer is air you’re actively paying to cool.
  • You hear a metal-on-metal scrape when operating the lever. This is the hinge pin wearing against the frame. Left alone, it scores the plate and makes a proper seal impossible without a full replacement.
  • The lever or chain hangs loose. The spring tension on the lift mechanism has released, usually from corrosion at the spring anchor. This is the most common failure we see in homes within a few miles of the Intracoastal.
  • You see rust staining on the firebox floor under the damper. That means the damper frame is sweating and rusting from above. The stain is cosmetic; the frame rot it indicates is structural.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard DuraFlex damper replacement in West Palm Beach, most homeowners pay between $285 and $520 installed. The range comes down to three things: the damper series, whether the existing frame can be reused with new hardware, and how much cleaning the flue needs before we can work safely. A top-mount DuraFlex unit runs toward the higher end because it involves roof access and re-terminating the cable through the flue wall.

Every quote includes the part, the labor, disposal of the old damper, and a written guarantee on the repair. Our guarantee runs a full year: if the damper fails within 365 days of the install, the second visit is free, parts and labor included. We don’t charge a diagnosis fee when we’re already there replacing the part. You’ll get the written price before we start, and the number on that paper is the number you pay.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check two things yourself. First, confirm the cable is still attached at the handle or lever. Second, shine a flashlight up and see if the damper plate is visibly warped or rusted at the edges. What we don’t recommend is removing the damper plate or frame hardware yourself. The frame is under spring tension in most DuraFlex models, and the plate is heavy enough to pinch a hand or drop onto the firebox floor. We’ve also seen DIY cable replacements where the homeowner used a generic cable clamp that held for a few weeks, then let go mid-winter when the damper was fully open. Could have been worse than it was.

If the damper is sticking, scraping, or letting drafts through, call us at (728) 203-8687. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a simple cable fix or a full replacement, and we’ll give you a straight estimate before we ever ring the doorbell.
