Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The West Palm Beach Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco chimney caps throughout West Palm Beach, and a full replacement with the new cap, fasteners, and labor typically runs $285 to $495 depending on flue size and roof access. Most jobs are completed the same day we arrive, and we keep the common Gelco sizes on the truck. Owners usually discover the cap has failed after a hard rain, when water streaks appear on the fireplace wall, or when birds start making noise in the flue. The cap looks simple from the ground, but its job is specific: keep water out, keep animals out, keep sparks in. When it stops doing those three things, the fix is rarely a patch.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes caps for both single-flue and multi-flue chimneys, and the most common models we install in West Palm Beach homes are the standard square and rectangular stainless versions built for clay tile flues, plus the round models for factory-built metal chimneys. The critical measurement is the outside dimensions of the flue tile or the inside of the metal flue, not the decorative chase. If you can reach the flue safely, a tape measure across the top will tell us what you need. If you can’t, we measure it for you at no charge during the estimate.

Gelco uses 304 stainless steel on most residential caps, with mesh screening that matches the flue size. Aftermarket equivalents exist, but we’ve seen too many thinner-gauge “universal fit” caps rust out in three years. A genuine Gelco cap in coastal West Palm Beach air, where salt and humidity work on metal year-round, typically lasts seven to ten years before the mesh or the mounting hardware starts to go. We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, but we stock and install their caps because they hold up here better than most.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water staining on the fireplace face or ceiling near the chimney. The cap’s rain shield has a cracked weld or the mounting collar has shifted, letting rain track down the flue. You’ll see it first as a faint brown line, then as peeling paint or drywall blisters.
  • Bird or bat noise coming from the flue. The mesh screen has torn or pulled away from the frame. Once birds get in, they nest fast, and a blocked flue becomes a carbon monoxide venting problem, not just a noise problem.
  • Rust streaks running down the flue tile or chase top. The cap’s base or hardware is corroding, which means water is pooling somewhere it shouldn’t. In West Palm Beach’s wet season, this accelerates fast.
  • Ember escape or a “spark shower” visible from the roof at night. The spark arrestor mesh is compromised. This is a fire hazard, especially during the dry winter months when outdoor burning and fire pit use peak in Florida.
  • The cap is leaning or visibly detached from the flue. Hurricane winds or a falling branch have knocked it loose. A loose cap scrapes the flue tile and lets rain drive in horizontally during storms.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In West Palm Beach, a Gelco chimney cap replacement with installation runs $285 to $495 for most single-flue homes, and $450 to $700 for multi-flue or oversized caps that need custom sizing. The price includes the new Gelco cap, stainless fasteners, the removal and disposal of the old cap, and the labor. What moves the number is roof pitch, flue height above the roof line, and whether we need a ladder or a lift. Two-story homes with steep roofs cost more because the access is slower and we anchor our safety lines differently.

You get a written price before we touch anything, and the cap installation carries the same 365-Day Done Right Promise as every repair we do. If the cap fails or loosens within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That guarantee is in writing, it comes with every job, and it doesn’t cost extra.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check your Gelco cap from the ground with binoculars: look for rust, shifted mesh, or a tilted cap. What you shouldn’t do is climb onto a two-story roof with a drill and a replacement cap under one arm. We’ve been called to fix more than one DIY install where the cap was secured to the flue with the wrong fasteners, then blown off in the next storm. The right installation requires matching the cap to the flue dimensions, anchoring to the tile or chase without cracking it, and sealing the collar so water can’t track underneath.

If you’re not comfortable on a pitched roof, that’s the answer. Call us at (728) 203-8687 and we’ll measure, quote, and install it without you ever leaving the ground.
